How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for Your Account

Protect your Dentare account with an extra layer of security. This guide explains why two-factor authentication matters and how to enable it in just a few minutes.

In this article:

Why Enable Two-Factor Authentication?

As a dental clinic, your Dentare account contains sensitive patient data β€” personal information, medical records, appointment history, and financial details. A password alone is no longer enough to keep this data safe.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second step when you log in. After entering your password, you must also enter a one-time code from an app on your phone. This means that even if someone steals or guesses your password, they cannot access your account without your phone.

Key reasons to enable 2FA:

  • Protect patient data β€” Healthcare data is a high-value target for attackers. 2FA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access.

  • Prevent account takeover β€” Passwords can be leaked, guessed, or phished. 2FA blocks these attacks.

  • Meet security standards β€” GDPR and healthcare regulations recommend strong authentication. 2FA is a simple way to comply.

  • Protect your business β€” A data breach can damage your clinic's reputation and result in legal consequences.

Important: We strongly recommend that every user in your clinic enables two-factor authentication, especially administrators and account owners.

What You'll Need

  • Access to your Dentare account

  • A smartphone with an authenticator app installed (e.g., Authy, Google Authenticator, or Microsoft Authenticator)

If you don't have an authenticator app yet, download one for free:

Step 1 β€” Go to Your Password Settings

  1. Log in to your Dentare account

  2. Go to Password Settings

  3. Scroll down to the Two-factor Authentication section

  4. Click Enable two-factor authentication

Step 2 β€” Save Your Backup Codes

After clicking enable, you will see a set of backup codes. These are emergency codes that let you access your account if you lose your phone.

  1. Download, print, or copy the backup codes

  2. Store them in a safe place (not on the same phone you use for 2FA)

  3. Click Next to continue

Important: Treat your backup codes like a password. If you lose both your phone and your backup codes, you may be locked out of your account.

Step 3 β€” Scan the QR Code

  1. Open your authenticator app on your phone

  2. Select Add account or tap the + button

  3. Choose Scan QR Code

  4. Point your phone camera at the QR code shown on screen

If you have trouble scanning, you can manually enter the secret key displayed below the QR code into your app.

Step 4 β€” Enter the Verification Code

  1. Your authenticator app will now show a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds

  2. Enter the current code in the verification field

  3. Click Verify

If the code is correct, two-factor authentication will be enabled on your account.

How It Works After Setup

Every time you log in to Dentare:

  1. Enter your email and password as usual

  2. You will be asked for a verification code

  3. Open your authenticator app and enter the current six-digit code

  4. Click Continue to access your account

The code changes every 30 seconds, so always use the latest code shown in your app.

How to Disable 2FA

If you need to disable two-factor authentication:

  1. Go to Password Settings

  2. In the Two-factor Authentication section, click Disable two-factor authentication

  3. Confirm when prompted

Note: We do not recommend disabling 2FA. If you are having issues with your authenticator app, try using your backup codes first, or contact the Dentare team for help.

Troubleshooting

The verification code is not accepted Make sure you are entering the latest code from your authenticator app. The code changes every 30 seconds β€” if it is about to expire, wait for a new one.

I lost my phone Use one of your backup codes to log in. After logging in, disable 2FA and re-enable it with your new device.

I lost my backup codes and my phone Contact the Dentare team for help at Dentare Support. You will need to verify your identity before we can reset your 2FA.

The QR code won't scan Use the manual entry option β€” copy the secret key shown below the QR code and paste it into your authenticator app.

My authenticator app shows the wrong time Authenticator codes are time-based. Make sure your phone's clock is set to automatic. On most phones, go to Settings > Date & Time and enable "Set automatically."
